SARAH PALIN: What Does She Mean?

This salon considers the new national political star Sarah Palin and what effect she might have on the race for the White House. Two weeks ago, she was unknown to most Americans. Now we're engaged in a crash course in all things Sarah. What is her story; her political philosophy, social philosophy, even her religious philosophy? Why was she chosen? Why so much support with so little information? Joining Rick around the square table in the Buli Cafes' Library Nook are: writer/blogger/poet RJ Jackson; social/political observer Roy Calhoun; writer/podcaster John Selig.

What Purpose Do Stereotypes Serve?

This salon was recorded on Sunday, August 31, 2008, during the Labor Day Holiday weekend, and between the two major political party conventions. Our focus is on stereotypes, and stereotyping, even being stereotyped. My dictionary defines "stereotype" as a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Gays are flamboyant. Blonds are dumb. Liberals are naive. Bisexuals are just undecided. In the coming presidential campaign stereotyping will likely be a major tactic in efforts to gain votes. So, we believe this conversation is relevant and important in trying to better understand the increasing use of "brands" and "archetypes" to define the issues and candidates, as well as educate and mobilize for political effect. Joining Rick Vanderslice is: writer/blogger/poet RJ Jackson; social/political observer Roy Calhoun; writer/podcaster John Selig

How Should America Deal With Immigration?

This salon was recorded Sunday, August 24, 2008 at the Buli Cafe on the Cedar Springs Strip in Dallas. The issue today is a hot one. How should America deal with immigration? The subject involves so many aspects of our shared and individual American lives. Race, class, ethnicity, jobs, labor, fairness, expectations and opportunities, and on, and on. Our conversation today may not lead to any large consensus among you, our listeners, but please know that our attempt to see, consider and try and better understand this complicated subject is from the heart as well as from the head.
Why Is It So Hard For Artists To Survive In America?

This salon was recorded at the Buli Cafe on the Cedar Springs Strip in Dallas on August 17, 2008. Host Rick Vanderslice has gathered some creative people around the square table in the Library Nook to consider the plight of the average American artist. Artists who paint, write, sculpt, play music, etc. Unlike many other nations, the U.S. gives a paltry amount of support to help nurture this creative class. Why is that? By comparison, small countries like Denmark or The Netherlands give a far greater percentage to help and encourage artists to make their art. Why don't we Americans believe in this kind of investment? Why don't we recognize the greater value of such investments to our society and our culture? And just what is the benefit of art to our cultural life in America? Joining Rick to consider todays question, "Why Is It So Hard For Artists To Survive In America?" are: writer/blogger/poet RJ Jackson; social/political observer Roy Calhoun; and artist Aaron Rathbun.

This salon was recorded at the Buli Cafe in Dallas on Sunday August 3, 2008. Rick Vanderslice offers a provocative question to ponder today: Why Do We Love Beautiful People More? If we're honest with ourselves, we have to admit that beautiful people do get our attention, even our fantasies. Why is that? Is beauty determined by majority vote? Should we broaden the definition to to cover more people? Is beauty only skin deep? Salon regulars RJ Jackson and Roy Calhoun join Rick around the square table in the Library Nook to consider todays slippery topic.

Is Greed Good?

Today. The Buli Salon considers the provocative question: Is Greed Good? Is it the necessary fuel to power our capitalist economic system? Converting growth into wealth is the holiest concept of capitalism, yet many people are now concerned about the high price we're paying for that concept. Climate change, world population increases, and wider divisions between the haves and have-nots on Earth have inspired many to imagine a better way for humans to organize their civilization and secure their happiness and survival. Joining this challenging conversation with Rick Vanderslice, around the square table in the Library Nook of the Buli Cafe in Dallas, are three of our favorite salon members: writer/blogger/poet RJ Jackson; Social/political observer Roy Calhoun; activist/writer/podcaster John Selig

This ruling, in effect, made homosexuality legal, especially in Texas, after years of official state oppression of an entire class of citizens. Lawrence v. Texas has also played a part in the Gay Marriage decisions of several states including California.
Cedar Springs: Dallas' Historic Gay Center Embraces Change

Every Sunday afternoon, as we record The Buli Salon, in the cozy Library Nook of the Buli Cafe, we look out on an eclectic mix of people sauntering along the busy, historic Cedar Springs Road in Dallas' Oak Lawn district. It's the heart and soul of this cities powerful and dynamic Gay community. Like other famous Gay centers around the country, including "The Castro" in San Francisco, LA's "West Hollywood", and New York's "Chelsea", gentrification has begun to influence the look, character and property values of "Cedar Springs" transforming it into one of the priciest and most desired places to live, work and play in all of Dallas. Joining RICK VANDERSLICE today to discuss the colorful past, dynamic present, and possible future of this unique place are three Cedar Springs business owners. TODD SEATON & DAVID RICHARDSON own several places along the strip including: Outlines, a contemporary edge fashion store; Skivvies, featuring one of the largest men's underwear selections anywhere; and Tapelenders, claiming the most complete Gay & Lesbian film library in the world. Also, SCOTT WHITTALL, co-owner of the Buli Cafe, Bakery & Bistro and, of course, our gracious host for The Buli Salons.
